7:51PM - Sunday night domesticity
Mmmm, I just made some tasty sesame noodles for dinner, and now have severe scallion breath.. TMI? Nevah!
I realized recently that e-mail has trashed my writing skills. I know this topic has been beaten to death, but it never really rang true for me on a personal level, until having to write an essay for a summer job that I want. Painful? Yes. Difficult to string words together? Yes. Trashed half of it on a re-read? Yes. Ugh. I finally got a relatively decent essay out of it, but damn it was hard. Having been, at one time in my life, a daily writer, the experience made me realize that the only regular writing I ever take on anymore is e-mails. And yeah they're amazing e-mails, damn straight, but the skill doesn't necessarily translate well to "real" writing.
Good story, right? Yep, c'est la vie, these days.
I start my new lizard tissue organizing job tomorrow! And when you read that, you have to read it in a super-nerdy voice.... cuz that's the only way I can say it, with a pale sort of grin/grimace of glee at the thought of spending all day alone with specimens.

8:40PM - yea lj
woo, livejournal! I realized reading my friends page that there is a whole crew of y'all that I otherwise don't communicate with, and it's nice to read up on what's up with you guys.... and here's a little something in return from me, too... maybe it'll become habitual again, hmmmm....
I live in Austin now with my girlfriend Heather. You can see pics from our cross-country road trip and current life here:
I am working at an after-school program called Citizen Schools which is pretty cool. I also teach young ones at the austin nature and science center.... also pretty fun. The contrast of experiences has made me realize my commitment to science, however (it's hard to compel myself to care about organized backpacks and quality homework with Citizen Schools), so after years of ambivalence, I'm going to actually apply to grad school for '09. Yes, '09... I need to take the regular and the biology GRE, ugh.
Anyways, the nuts and bolts of my current life..... I think I also have a fever today, maybe due to riding my bike in the sudden 60 degree weather, whoa. Feels like fall, which doesn't really happen much in Texas!

google. elaine. needs. yields:
Elaine needs to spend time undergoing complex treatment;
“Elaine needs vendor master and check processing.”
Elaine needs a better ear for language, and more sense in place of sentiment.
Seems to me Elaine needs to roust herself out of the sack - at least on weekends - and go for coffee with her hubby.
If you have any real estate needs, simply call Elaine and pack your bags.
Elaine needs time to grade and return your paper Elaine needs to preserve her supply of Today sponges as they have gone off the market Elaine needs more corrections to the board markups I gave her Elaine needs to transfer logins among SQL Server machines without network connections.
makes my life seem but trivial....

Thanks everyone for the response to my nomadic proposal. Still rolling around the details in my mind (and still checking out a couple of apartments today), but I'm thinking it's probably going to happen. I'll be in touch with you awesome couch/room-offering people soon about details....
Unfortunately, I do have to stay in the city to work and so on, if I could just do a whole northeast tour I totally would! Somehow I think the idea to make/save money would fall by the wayside in that case, though.... :)
Hey, for all you Brooklynites and other people in the area, passing along an invite for a friend's event, should be awesome!!
"As many of you know I spend two afternoons a week in Brooklyn High Schools (Bushwick and New Utrecht) as the program coordinator for Girls CAN. Girls CAN provides peer-facilitated workshops for female students on topics ranging from depression to sex and decision-making. The Quiz Night will raise vital finds to help us finish out the school year. Please join us for this entertaining evening- I hope to see you there. Peace, Alison."

7:32PM - A Plan
I here submit, for your consideration, a hypothetical plan for life. For my life, specifically, but I think it's an interesting notion that so many people, especially those not tied down to much in life, can consider, to live cheaply and rather nomadically for a while. Here goes.
Plan: Couch-Nomad NYC (working title)
A bit of background, first of all: I recently was offered again the opportunity to travel back to Vanuatu for some more lizarding. Yay!!!! I get paid a bit this time, but still have to pay for airfare, my bills back home, et cetera. But whatever, I have a little bit of cash socked away, and it looks like I can make it happen. Next, in a conversation with a co-worker who may be moving to Kenya soon, the idea was proposed of just travelling on for a few months (at least) after Vanuatu. What a plan! Of course, it came back to finances...ie, having none....which leads to....
Until the end of May, I am living in a room that I paid the rent for up-front. It is amazing to me how much I can put away when I don't have to cut that check every month...I know it's fairly obvious, but rent is most people's largest expense, and it is absolutely over the top here in New York. So! Here is an enormous expense I can cut back on. And here is the Plan....For the three months of the summer, I beg you, my friends, for the use of your couch or perchance even a spare room (!) to sleep on, for 1-2 weeks, no more. In return, I can pay a small sum, cook you a nice dinner(s), or take care of your plants/pets while you are out of town.
Okay, but there's more, I'm not just being a shmuck. I want to make it a real project, keep a blog of my experiences, of no privacy, owning barely any possessions, and re-acclimating to a new space every couple of weeks. In essence, it's much like travelling abroad as I will be doing, but having to still keep my jobs and life afloat. I will keep a map of NYC charting my course around the city, and hopefully have pictures as well.
I plan to make it an informal study of space in the city, how people utilize it, what people are willing to pay, as well as an introspective venture as to my own force of will, physical exertion, life without the material things I rely on currently, and so forth. This may feed into my larger world travel Plan, I want to go with some kind of theme, perhaps use of space and resources may be it.
*I still haven't totally convinced myself that this is a good plan...though I'm getting close. Thoughts about the general plan?? Do you think *you* could do it?
*Friends in nyc~ Would you host? and even non-nyc friends, were this proposed to you locally, would you participate?
*The closest thing to a blog I have is this...anyone care to host couchnomadnyc.com??
*As to the world travel, I'm wide open...tell me where I should go and why!

word! Life rocks right now. Figured I should update, it's been awhile.... time for a bulleted list:
* my job is awesome. Today I taught eighth grade girls about Manhattan schist ("shiiissssssst") and seventh graders about watersheds. Woot! The kids suck sometimes, but for the most part, I love it. The office politics on the other hand, I could do without. It makes me think I really will end my job there when my term is up in September...but we'll see, lots of time to decide.
* Looking to move soon...my commute is killing me. Though sometimes I feel the subway sucks out my soul slowly, today on the way home was really awesome. I was subway zen, man. Having music helps infinitely, though not good for eavesdropping. But no one really talks too much on commute rides anyway... I am torn between upper Manhattan and Brooklyn, though, I really really really love my 'hood. Especially now that I've bonded with friends two blocks away. *sigh*. I did check out this amazing place at 113th and 7th ave, but the chica is not returning my calls and I am done with *psycho-i-want-to-live-with-you* messages. heh... we shall see.
* Lots of friends lately....steve hosted a rockin' party in Connecticut, complete with a late-night porn store run. Two of them, no less, we are fancy people. And before that was Evan's birthday soiree at my house, mad Tekken. Last night we finally made it to the amazing sushi place we tried to go previously...Tomoe, on thompson and houston, for those city-dwellers. Dinner rocked, and even some drama when this guy a couple tables over kept passing out. Too much sake, said he.... right-o.
so life rolls on...tonight is perogis and princess mononoke with my new-found friends. :D
ps~ today is international water day! drink up while our fresh water still exists....

right. on. :D
I am a Pacman Ghost.
I like to hang around with friends, chatting, dancing, all that sort of thing. We don't appreciate outsiders, and do our best to discourage others approaching us. I enjoy occasionally wandering around randomly, and often find that when I do so, I get to where I wanted to be. What Video Game Character Are You?

While doing research on Tanukis tonight, I came across this strange gallery page. Furry implications and a total inability on the part of my browser to even display the text (nevermind an utter ignorance on my part of any Asian languages) aside, it's just hella weird to scroll through. Hey, even click on people in furry animal suits, get a closer look at a real live tanuki! (minus the over-inflated testicles, of course).
ugh, look at this chick. no wonder she's pissed, with that tricksie tanook looming in the background!
